The True Sheriff (Betsoft Gaming)
The True Sheriff became Betsoft Gaming’s first widescreen HD 3D slot machine when it was released in 2013, and it is by far the best Western themed slot machine currently available – featuring a maximum win of 750,000 coins. As is common with 3D slots by Betsoft, The True Sheriff contains a total of 5 reels and 30 paylines. Coin denominations range from 0.02 to 0.50 and between 1 and 5 coins can be bet per line, meaning you can play for a maximum of $75 per spin. Symbols used include four characters (Sheriff, a Villain, Saloon Girl, and Gambler) as well as a gun, Sheriff’s badge, Wild, and the 10 to Ace playing card symbols. It also contains several bonus games which are the Wild Guns feature (Sheriff shoots five symbols on the reels which turn into Wilds for one respin), free spins mode (get 10, 12 or 15 free spins along with 30, 300 or 3,000 coins respectively), a double up feature (double standard game wins by choosing if the next card will be red or black), and the Showdown Bonus feature (the Sheriff is having a shootout with the Villain and there are six levels of predicting the outcome of a coin toss and you have two lives, guess correctly to defeat the Villain and win big!).
John Wayne (Playtech)
John Wayne is one of the greatest American actors of all time, starring in well over 150 Western movies including titles such as The Searchers and Rio Bravo. The star passed away back in 1979 but his movies remain so popular to this day that Playtech have immortalized him in an online slot. It contains 5 reels and 25 paylines, and between $0.01 and $50 can be bet each line, meaning you can bet up to $1,250 per spin. As you would expect from a slot based on John Wayne, he features as symbols on the reels with three photographs of him used, plus an image of him is on the games Wild, joining the Ranch bonus symbol, cowboy hat, Duke badge, bandana, cowboy boots, plus the Ace to ten playing card symbols are used. There are various exciting bonus games available including the Duke’s Badge feature (land three or more badge symbols anywhere on the reels and select one of them, with a reward of up to 120x your initial bet available). The most rewarding game is the Ranch Bonus feature which sees you shoot cans which contain different prizes (multipliers, more free games, 3 more bullets etc) and these are then added onto your free spins which usually bring some very large wins!

In Western Belles by IGT, the world’s leading slot developer have gone back to a classic slots theme: the Wild West, or more specifically the beautiful ‘cowgirls’ of that era. This is a 40 line video slot with a twist. Players have the option to spend 160 more coins to have a completely wild reel on every spin. This reel is randomly placed, and can combine with the regular wilds to produce some huge wins. This slot beat my expectations – both the standard play and bonus feature have some innovative extras, and the slot looks great to boot.
It is the combination of graphics and sounds which made Western Belles stand out for me. The galloping noises, whip cracks and slow music taken straight from movie soundtracks do not dominate like they do in many slots. The atmosphere in the free spins bonus round is completely different. Here a piano plays, just like in the old saloons – which livens things up no end.
During the bonus feature, the reels change colour and you’ll get a new Belle as a wild. This time 2 complete reels are wild for every spin (you start with 5). I am sure you can imagine that this does produce a lot of big wins.
You can play this slot with up to 40 lines – though this means you’ll be missing out on one of the best features. By playing the full lines and adding a wild reel, you pay 200 coins per spin. What you get in return is a lot more wins. The wild reel appears randomly in any of the 5 positions for every spin. When selecting this option you’ll also get the 2 wild reels during the free spins bonus round. At the minimum 1c a spin, this makes the minimum for this game $2. Like all IGT slot machines, the max spin is super-high with the coin size going up to $50.Other than the Belles themselves, the symbol you’ll want to see a lot of is the lipstick kiss. This is the regular wild symbol in this slot, and also the biggest payer. It is worth 1000 coins for 5 of a kind, and will substitute for everything except the bonus symbol. The belles come next, with the blonde and brunette both worth 500 coins for 5. These are followed by the cowboy hat, boot and then the themed playing card symbols.
The bonus symbol simply says ‘Bonus’ on a wooden background. This symbol only appears on the middle 3 reels. If one of those reels is wild with the special feature, then the bonus can still land on top of it. This did feel a little ‘clumsy’ for me, though it does solve the problem of two incompatible features.

5 Free spins is certainly on the low side, however the extra features more than make up for this. You’ll see a Belle hitting a triangle above a cooking pot over a fire, and then be taken to a different set of reels (coloured blue), with a different wild setup. As long as you paid the 200 coins and had the extra wilds, you’ll find 2 reels at random become wild in this game. There are still the regular (lipstick) wilds in play too – which creates some huge wins.Western Slot Wheels
It is possible to retrigger for 5 more spins with 3 more of the bonus symbols. At the end of the game you’ll see a poster with your total win on it, and then return to the main game.

I really enjoyed this slot; it is innovative, upbeat and has the potential for huge wins from the double-wild free spins round. For many people, the $2 per spin will be on the high side. I’d recommend you choose the extra wild reel feature and pay this price – as the number of wins you hit will be significantly higher. The maximum RTP of this game is a generous 96.33% – a lot of this will come from the ‘double wild’ free spins round.Western Slot Machine
The sound effects and visuals work really well together, and this slot has the professionalism in the gameplay you would expect from IGT. I recommend you add this game to your ‘must play’ list and check it out soon.
